YOUR ITINERARY

DAY

01

ARRIVAL IN CHRISTCHURCH

Welcome to Christchurch, the city of churches.

A representative of BonResa Adventures will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Depending on when you arrive, you’ll have some time to relax and rest or do some sightseeing before the tour briefing. Enjoy a welcome dinner with fellow bikers In the evening.

MC South Island Day 1 - Christchurch
MC South Island Day 2 - Punakaiki

DAY

02

Christchurch - Punakaiki

New Zealand’s South Island is a mecca for nature lovers. Without much delay we would hit the pedals and start off our South Island ride this morning.

To stat off, we would be crossing a mountain pass today, the Lewis Pass. We would be traversing the entire breadth of South Island today from the east coast to the west coast via the mountainous road to reach our destination Punakaiki on the west coast. The west coast is Incredibly rugged with wild rocky beaches and a backdrop of high mountain peaks, this area experienced its own gold rush in the late 19th century. Largely untamed, wildlife and birds are plentiful. You’ll be amazed at how thousands of years of rain, wind and saltwater have formed the Pancake Rocks and the gigantic Blowholes at Punakaiki. Those who wish to try their hands on kayaking can do so at Punakaiki.

DAY

03

Punakaiki - Franz Josef

We would continue our ride southwards along the coast and cross towns like Greymouth and Hokitika.

After a great ride we’ll arrive at two of the most prolific glaciers in the world – Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier are tumbling rivers of ice streaking down the valleys towards the sea.

MC South Island Day 3 - Franz Josef
MC South Island Day 4 - Wanaka

DAY

04

Franz Josef - Wanaka

Early morning risers, hop onto your bikes and ride to Lake Matheson. On a good day, the famous ‘mirror lake’ reflects extraordinary views of distant Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman in its forest-shaded waters.

Post breakfast, we will be riding further south towards Haast, an inland coastal town from where we would ride eastwards to Wanaka. From Haast we’ll ride over the Alps via the beautiful Haast Pass. The road winds along steep slopes with huge views over the glacier lakes Hawea and Wanaka. So long described as Queenstown’s smaller and more demure sibling, Wanaka now feels grown up enough to have moved out of home and asserted its own identity. Enjoy the multitude of pubs that dot the lakeside and don’t forget to catch a glimpse of the Wanaka Tree while you are in the town.

DAY

05

Wanaka - TE ANAU

Today’s ride is no less interesting than the previous day in terms of twists and turns! Get ready to ride to Queenstown, the adrenaline capital of the world via an equally adrenaline road from Wanaka to Cardona. We would ride past Queenstown and keep riding south along Lake Wakatipu to Te Anau.

Picturesque Te Anau is the main gateway to Milford Sound and three Great Walks: the Milford, Kepler and Routeburn Tracks. Te Anau is not our final destination though, brace for the ultimate scenic beauty of a lifetime when you continue riding towards Milford Sound on the Milford Highway. We would go for a cruise in the Milford Sound and will ride back to Te Anau later today.

Those who wish to spend the night in a cottage in Milford Sound, a rare luxury that very few people can afford and indulge in, can avail by paying an additional amount.

MC South Island Day 5 - Milford Sound
MORNING MAGIC. Early morning risers in Invercargill are often treated to the most magnificent sunrises. The sky appeared to be on fire at this early scene at the Stead st bridge.

DAY

06

TE ANAU - Invercargill

Those who opted to stay at Milford Sound the previous night would go for a cruise in the Milford Sound this morning (picnic lunch is included), one of the highlights of the trip. Milford Sound is a pot of gold. Rising above the fjord’s indigo water is Mitre Peak (Rahotu), the deserved focal point of millions of photographs. Tapering to a cloud-piercing summit, the 1,692m high mountain appears sculpted by a divine hand. Watch wildlife like seals and dolphins in the Sound or if we are lucky we can see some whales too!

Hop onto your bikes to ride south and then east to Invercargill. We all will be delighted to visit the Classic Motorcycle Mecca Museum in Invercargill. Invercargill has long been a revhead’s heaven, thanks in part to local legend Burt Munro, who claimed an overland speed world record by motorcycle.

DAY

07

Invercargill - Queenstown

Our destination today is Queenstown, the ‘adrenaline capital of the world’ but before that we need to visit the Catlins region of South Island to witness the Purakaunui Falls, one of the most beautiful in all of New Zealand.

From Purakaunui, we would continue our ride north west to reach Queenstown. Those who want to try bungy jumping can do so in Kawarau Gorge. Overnight at Queenstown in a lux hotel overlooking Lake Wakatipu.

MC South Island Day 7 - Queenstown
MC South Island Day 8 - Glenorchy

DAY

08

REST DAY

A rest day to relax and rejuvenate. Thrill seekers beware – you will get dizzy at the multitude of options that this town offers to tourists to pump up their heart beat. The ‘adrenaline capital of the world’ has plenty to keep you busy. Choose from bungy jumping, jet-boating, white-water rafting, river surfing, white-water sledging, paragliding, parachuting, canyoning, mountain biking and aerial sightseeing! we’re out of breath just saying all of that. Still not enough? Add fishing, water-skiing, windsurfing, yachting, horseback riding and rock climbing. You have an extra day here to make the most of the activities on offer.

For the not-so-active it has some of the best restaurants on the South Island in one of the most scenic spots in the world on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. If nothing of the above sounds interesting, you can simply collapse onto a sofa.

DAY

09

Queenstown - Mt Cook Village

Another day of riding and another mountain pass to cross.

Start off the ride from Queenstown and ride north to reach Lindis Pass. Crossing Lindis Pass would bring us to the shores of Lake Pukaki. We will stop at the town having the same name as the lake for lunch before continuing our ride to Mt Cook Village. The road from Pukaki to Mt Cook Village is a stunner! The road goes all along the azure lake. Like Milford Sound, Mt Cook Village is another destination that most tourists do not spend a night, but we will!

Mt Cook Village sits at the lap of Mt Cook, the highest mountain (debatable) in Oceania. The Village is a mecca for hikers and mountain lovers. Hike the numerous trails that this region has to offer until you feel exhausted and retire in your room.

MC South Island Day 9 - Mt Cook Village
MC South Island Day 10 - Christchurch

DAY

10

Mt Cook Village - Christchurch

The road to Mt Cook Village is the same one that we will be taking today to return to Pukaki before turning left towards Lake Takapo. Such splendid Mackenzie Country and Southern Alps views are reason enough to linger, but there’s infinitely more to see if you wait till dark. In 2012 the Aoraki Mackenzie area was declared an International Dark Sky Reserve, one of only 12 in the world. We would make a brief stopover at Lake Tekapo to see the lake and visit the Church of the Good Shepherd.

Continuing our ride would bring us to Christchurch, the largest city of South Island. Also known as the ‘Garden City’, Christchurch is the most ‘English’ of New Zealand’s cities and was designed to reflect ordered class structure instead of being just another shabby colonial outpost. Stroll through exquisite gardens, punt on the Avon River, ride a tram or people-watch in Cathedral Square.

DAY

11

DEPART CHRISTCHURCH

Depending on the flight, go out in the city and do some last minutes shopping for your family and friends before heading out to the airport.
