YOUR ITINERARY

DAY

01

ARRIVAL IN AUCKLAND

Welcome to Auckland – New Zealand’s most cosmopolitan city.

A representative of BonResa Adventures will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Depending on when you arrive, you’ll have some time to relax and rest or do some sightseeing before the tour briefing. Enjoy a welcome dinner with fellow bikers In the evening.

Oceania - NZL - North Island Day 10 - Auckland
Oceania - NZL - North Island Day 2 - Bay of Islands

DAY

02

Auckland - Paihia

A short ride today. We will be riding north to Paihia, Bay of Islands. Heading north you’ll ride on great roads past beautiful shorelines, subtropical vegetation, waterfalls and incredible scenery up to the famous Bay of Islands. The Twin Coast Highway leads you through the heart of Maori culture and past villages with quaint cafés, museums and shops all built in the original colonial style.

Rather than taking a direct shorter route, we will be taking a longer and rural route that would take us to the lesser ridden bike trails of the region to reach Paihia. Next to Paihia is Waitangi, the place famous for the signing of the Treaty between the Maori and the then government.

DAY

03

Paihia - Whangarei

A long day of riding awaits us today. A total of 573 kms. We will be riding to the “end of the world” or more specifically to Cape Reinga, the northern most point of New Zealand. Clear blue water and innumerable sheltered coves will make plain to you why this area is so famous for its coastal scenery! A relaxed approach to pretty much everything, sets the pace in the Bay of Islands. Cape Reinga is a must see for that special feeling of reaching the ‘end of the world’ when you look out over the endless ocean. The coming together of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean happens just off the point, which makes for some very lively waters – even in good weather!

We would take the same route back to Awanui and then take a different route to reach Whangarei.

Oceania - NZL - North Island Day 3 - Cape Reinga
Oceania - NZL - North Island Day 4 - Muriwai

DAY

04

Whangarei - Thames

Another day of long riding – from Northland to Coromandel. Along the way we would stop at Muriwai. Muriwai’s main attraction is the Takapu Refuge gannet colony, spread over the southern headland and outlying rock stacks. Viewing platforms get you close enough to watch (and smell) these fascinating seabirds.

A short ride away from Muriwai is Piha and Kite Kite Falls. Piha is a beautifully rugged, iron-sand beach has long been a favourite for Aucklanders escaping from the city’s stresses – whether for day trips, weekend teenage parties or family holidays.

We would continue our ride to Thames, the gateway to Coromandel Peninsula.

DAY

05

thames - Rotorua

Today our destination is Rotorua, a lakeside town. Rotorua is in the south of Thames, however we would be taking a longer route by going north to circumnavigate the Coromandel Peninsula before turning south towards Rotorua. The Coromandel Peninsula juts into the Pacific east of Auckland, forming the eastern boundary of the Hauraki Gulf. Although relatively close to the metropolis, the Coromandel offers easy access to splendid isolation. Its dramatic, mountainous spine bisects it into two very distinct parts.

Once reached in Rotorua, get ready to jump into your dry suits and experience white water rafting that you have never experienced in your life! Spend the night at Rotorua and visit the Redwoods Forest in late afternoon.

DAY

06

Rotorua - Tongariro

We would start off early today to visit the spectacle at Lady Knox Geyser at 10 am. Next to the Geyser is the thermal wonderland of Wai O Tapu – a land of striking beauty & contrast. We would continue riding south to Taupo, another lakeside town. Travelling into Taupo on a clear day along the northeastern shores of the lake is breathtaking: beyond the lake, which is the size of Singapore, you can see the snow capped peaks of Tongariro National Park. Adrenaline junkies can go for a sky diving over the lake in the afternoon.

Another 1.5 hrs of riding along Lake Taupo would bring us to Tongariro National Park. Even before you arrive in Tongariro National Park its three mighty volcanoes – Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro – steal your breath from the horizon. It would be a wasted opportunity not to get closer, to be closer we mean spending a night in the National Park.

DAY

07

rest day

We have a few options for today. The easiest and the most boring is to treat this as a rest day.

Second, go for a ride around the Mt Taranaki region.

Third and the most adventurous, go for a hike on the Tangariro Alpino Crossing (or half way through), the most famous hike in all of the North Island.

Oceania - NZL - North Island Day 7 - Tongariro NP
Oceania - NZL - North Island Day 8 - Mt Taranaki

DAY

08

Tongariro - New Plymouth

Our destination is New Plymouth. Enroute to New Plymouth we would ride to the base of Mt Taranaki, an active stratovolcano on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. We would visit Dawson Falls and hike for an hour or so before riding towards New Plymouth.

Dominated (in the best possible way) by Mt Taranaki and surrounded by lush farmland, New Plymouth is the only international deep-water port in this part of New Zealand.

DAY

09

New Plymouth - Auckland

The last day of riding and a long day awaits us today. Our destination is Auckland. Enroute to Auckland we would stop at Waitomo to visit the glowworm caves. The limestone caves and glowing bugs here are one of the North Island’s premier attractions. The name Waitomo comes from wai (water) and tomo (hole or shaft): dotted across this region are numerous shafts dropping into underground cave systems and streams. There are 300+ mapped caves in the area: the three main caves – Glowworm, Ruakuri and Aranui – have been bewitching visitors for over 100 years.

Visit Marakopa Falls, one of the best waterfalls in New Zealand before turning north to Auckland. Enjoy a farewell dinner in Auckland.
